YBUKI Paris is, above all, a heritage project envisioned by Yuki Tokunaga. Born and raised in the Kagoshima region, she grew up immersed in the legacy of the Oshima Tsumugi kimono. Upon discovering that countless precious textiles remained meticulously preserved yet unused, she resolved to elevate these fabrics through a conscious upcycling approach—seamlessly intertwining her Japanese heritage with the life she has built in France over the past 30 years.
Located in southern Japan, the Kagoshima region encompasses the subtropical Amami archipelago, a sanctuary where nature and tradition remain profoundly intertwined (National Geographic, 2017). Master craftsmanship is central to life here, harnessing the archipelago's unique resources—such as its iron-rich soil—to create exceptional textiles using ancestral techniques that date back over 1,300 years.
Behind each piece in our collection lies an extraordinary artisanal savoir-faire, passed down through generations. Born from a demanding 30-step process of alternating weaving and dyeing, every Oshima Tsumugi fabric is a masterpiece of precision. It is crafted at a rhythm detached from economic pressure and transient fashion cycles—a process where patience and rigor govern every movement.
Revered alongside Persian rugs and Gobelins tapestries as one of the world's three great textiles, Oshima Tsumugi is distinguished by its intricate patterns, matchless flexibility, and weightless grace. Today, preserved by only a few remaining families in the island region of Kagoshima, this exceptional craftsmanship stands on the brink of disappearance.
